DTCO 4.1a – the new generation of tachographs

By August 19, 2025, all vehicles over 3.5 tons operating across borders in Europe must be equipped with a smart tachograph of the second version, such as the DTCO® 4.1a or higher. VDO's flexible universal programming (#FUP) has standardized and simplified the installation of the new devices, regardless of vehicle model and year of manufacture. This means that, through clever programming, we can cover around 120 OEM variants with just four aftermarket variants, resulting in lower storage costs and improved product availability. A special algorithm ensures data compatibility and seamless integration.

DTCO software update according to manufacturer specifications

Latest update 4.1b available from September 2025

With the introduction of the smart tachograph version 2 (VDO DTCO 4.1 and higher), vehicle units must have the option of a software update in order to ensure continuous compliance with security requirements, card updates, and changes to legal requirements.

Therefore it is essential to carry out existing software updates as part of the periodical tachograph inspection. The WorkshopTab will automatically guide you through the entire DTCO software update process within the user interface; the periodical inspection will be carried out subsequently.

The current DTCO 4.1b software update focuses on functions that are necessary due to legal requirements as well as for security and quality reasons.

The perfect digital assistant: The VDO WorkshopTab2

The testing and calibration of smart VDO tachographs can be carried out at the vehicle with the VDO WorkshopTab2 – with immediate online processing of the data.

The smart VDO tachographs DTCO 4.1a and higher use the GNSS global navigation satellite system. A GNSS test is compulsory to specify the exact vehicle position at any time. You can also carry out this test easily using the WorkshopTab.

Intuitive sequences guide you reliably through all the functions, step-by-step. The software does all the paperwork in the background. The relevant documents are transferred from the vehicle to the printer at the push of a button.

The new EU regulation requires mandatory map updates to be installed on the DTCO 4.1a or higher on a regular basis, which must be carried out during the next upcoming periodical tachograph inspection at the latest.

The WorkshopTab is equipped with the corresponding software and the WorkshopTab DTCO update cable is required for this purpose.

KITAS 4 – The smart sensor for legally compliant tachograph systems

The KITAS 4 is a digital speed sensor for precise and contactless detection of the transmission speed. Developed for use in smart tachograph systems, it communicates with the tachograph in encrypted form and meets the highest security standards.
